On 15th July 2015, Sospter Opondo led a team of lawyers in the training of lawstudents on legal aid during the inaugural launch of the SOKLaw Access to Justice Programme. The students were drawn from various Universities in Kenya including the Kenya School of Law. He emphasized the need of developing client interviewing skills and an awareness of the socio-cultural barriers that form an impediment to the provision of legal aid. Ms Faith Simiyu and Mr Gilbert Omware assisted in the legal aid training. Ms Faith Simiyu welcomed students and urged them to dicover and explore their legal skills upon being empowered during the training. Mr Gilbert also debriefed students on the legal aid training manual reiterating the essence of providing informed legal advise.
Upon the conclusion of the training exercise, students accompanied the firm to a lawcamp in Embu County where they were able to put the lessons learnt into practise. Some students have had the priviledge in following up on cases arising from the Embu County lawcamp and are currently working closely with the firm in preparing pauper briefs, legal opinions and reports on the same.
Students interested in future trainings should keep an eye out for announcements on the same before the cloe of the year!
